A modern odyssey, a dizzying, science fiction-like journey into the heart of Africa. At the moment when Sudan, the continent's biggest country, is being divided into two nations, an old 'civilizing' pathology re-emerges – that of colonialism, clash of empires, and yet new episodes of bloody (and holy) wars over land and resources.
“We Come As Friends is my longest project ever, a film that was hardest to make because I was trying to penetrate deep into the soul of our society’s collective disease. It’s a very difficult task and I believe the disease is called colonialism… The greatest challenge was primarily trying to describe this phenomenon with a cinematic language, then reading between the lines and overcoming the craziest aspect of colonialism: the fact that our civilisation is constantly inventing some big story that is supposed to justify our actions.” (Hubert Sauper)
